With developed mining and crafts, by the 18th century, it grew into a significant economic and trade center in the region.

The town actively participated in the Karposh Uprising (1689) and the Ilinden Uprising (1903), serving as a center of resistance against Ottoman rule. These events shaped its revolutionary spirit.

After liberation from the Ottomans in 1912, the town was successively under Serbian, Bulgarian, and Yugoslav rule.
