History of Kriva Palanka
In northeastern Macedonia, between the Osogovo Mountains and the clear waters of the Kriva River, lies the town of Kriva Palanka.
Kriva Palanka was founded in 1633 as a fortified town with strategic importance on the route to Bulgaria. With developed mining and crafts, by the 18th century, it grew into a significant economic and trade center in the region.
The town actively participated in the Karposh Uprising (1689) and the Ilinden Uprising (1903), serving as a center of resistance against Ottoman rule. These events shaped its revolutionary spirit.
After liberation from the Ottomans in 1912, the town was successively under Serbian, Bulgarian, and Yugoslav rule. Its inhabitants actively engaged in the struggle for freedom, especially during World War II.
Following its liberation in 1944, Kriva Palanka experienced economic and cultural growth. New institutions, factories, and infrastructure were built, and the population increased rapidly.
The town developed as the economic and administrative center of the region, actively participating in international projects and cooperation. Today, it represents a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity.
The monastery, built in the 12th century, is a spiritual and cultural center of national importance. With its rich manuscript and literary tradition, it is a significant attraction for pilgrims and visitors.
